Use of facilities

Set in 25 acres of parkland, The Genevieve Nursery is housed in purpose built accommodation.  The Nursery shares this new building with the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes, so all children aged 2 ˝ - 7 have their own area, away from the rest of the School.

The building hosts a range of classrooms and play areas specifically designed to be safe and fun zones in which your child can grow and develop.

Each nursery classroom leads out onto a well equipped playground.  The children also have supervised use of the cottage garden which is a shaded play area enjoyed in the summer months.

The nursery children also benefit from regular use of Thornton College’s excellent facilities, which include the sports hall, group activity room with interactive whiteboard, assembly hall, ballet and dance studio, library and dining hall .

Snacks and Meal times

Our school catering team provides the nursery with a wide range of foods for lunch and snack times.  As they buy in a wide range of foods for the whole school, the Nursery can partake in this diversity.

At snack times there are grapes, apples, pears, pineapple, oranges, tomatoes, cucumber and celery during the week, along with pitta bread, bread sticks, croissant, crackers and biscuits. Food is laid out on plates, which are placed at the centre of the table.  The fruit and vegetables are washed and chopped by our professional kitchen staff into child size pieces.

The Nursery children eat in the school dining hall at lunchtimes.  The children can choose from a wide variety of freshly prepared home cooked meals.

Meals and snack times are social occasions and an opportunity for the children to develop independence.  The children wash their hands and then if they require water to drink they find their cup and get the water from the machine, or get a carton of milk and put it on the table.   As staff we like to sit with the children.  It is a lovely time to relax with them and talk.  They learn to relax with us and talk.

They learn to ask for things nicely, for example, saying please and thank you.  They learn table manners, not playing with food, waiting until everyone has finished before they get up.  They learn to eat healthily and to try new foods.  They learn to help clear up, taking their empty drinks away and putting rubbish in the bin.  Some also enjoy helping to wipe the tables.
